Would love to hear peoples horror stories. You can probably go different ways on this, Time periods, bad sound, bad weather, sick band members, 1995, ect. For me it's Foxboro 1987 with Dylan. No effort and all that new material. One dead set and that Dylan set is brutal. If there is anyone out there that can sit through Joey I'd like to buy you a beer.

Funny, this is an interesting question -- taken literally, it is so much about the experience you had live at the show, and which was the worst. This ia quite different from 'which is the worst show?" ...which is really more of a tape comparison.

For me the worst live experience Tacoma Dome '86 ...man, the sound was so bad in that place, and the show was so lifeless and lame. Santana was good, though.

Like many others, this site has allowed me to revive what I loved about all those great shows from earlier...

agree on the tacoma dome show in 1988.
we were on our way up to whistler.
the roma in tacoma - the dead stunk it up that night, but santana was good.

can't say any show i ever saw i would apply the word "worst" to. a show or two in 88 where Jerry's vocals were beyond hurting (April i think) may have been bad - but they didn't play overly poorly.

then again, i haven't listened to every show i have seen after the fact and i may have been somewhat "altered" which made the show great even though it wasn't.

Wish i could remember a Bad Show but i Cant.

I was at boriel (sp) ridge and was pretty happy xcept for the large man who insisted on butting in line.
sure remember Jerrys Maroon T-shirt and the fassion craze afterword.
Peace and Love in the parking lot.

I have reviewed that parking lot scene and trying to park that many many masses of cars in a parking lot over and over in my head for the last 20 years and i vote that one one of the finest examples of mass parking that I have ever seen.

It was Classic!!

Thanks to the archive I have a crispy audio to go with my crispy memroy of a classic show.

Long Live the Fat Man.

Had no idea what they'd sound like, was expecting some pseudo GD, but this is far beyond that, as you of course know more than anyone. And for an AUD, damn, this sounds as good as a board. Just real good stuff. Thanks for inspiring me in that direction!

1988 was not a great year ...the only thing memorable (fro my tapes) was the Jack Straw from Oxford.

For me it was easily the Highgate, Vt show in 95. I swore never to see them again after that. I didn't like the scene and the music was the worst I ever heard. I said it at the time and it still holds true, that was the worst live show by ANY band that I ever saw!

Yeah, I saw a 1987 show with Dylan at the Oakland Coliseum that was so bad I walked out - Both Bobbies were screaming, not singing. Forgetting the words, it was an embarrassment.

The show's not on LMA... is that the case with all Dylan/Dead shows?

Outside the side door of Winterland, circa 1978...

The guards didn't even want people on that side of the street, but we kept coming back over.

My friend suddenly climbed up the fire escape - an amazing physical feat, I couldn't believe it even as I watched him do it.

Someone had opened the fire door and circus boy went for it in a NY second.

Suddenly someone in the audience opened the street level side door and in a heartbeat I dashed from the cold stark sidewalk to the middle of a Dead set.

It was hot inside, while the band was tepid.

I took off my velvet coat and watched the rest of the show without making a sound, until the lights came up and the band was leaving the stage.

I yelled out "Cream Puff War!" and tossed a bunch of bread crumbs on the stage.

"Father" was there on the Winterland floor, surrounded by several of his followers.

It was time to leave. I looked for my coat on the side seat where I left it but it was gone.
I left via the front exit, and found the guy standing outside holding my coat - I said thanks and grabbed it.

Don't know if i can pick a worst, but there sure were some contenders. What comes to mind most readily is Brendan Byrne Arena, spring of '88. I think it was the 3/31 show. Bad vibes, bad acid, bad setlist (or so i seem to recall), bad weather, and shitty trip back to NC. And how odd, just as i finish that sentence another Jersey show comes to mind, Giants Stadium, i think July of '89. Don't remember the exact date off hand. Well, actually the show wasn't really so bad (i think Los Lobos opened ... though could be wrong about that, it's just that is what my memory is telling me). Anyhow, i couldn't get tickets to the show, and so i signed on with a temp agency to sell hotdogs and other stadium type food from one of the many food vendors. And voila, just as the opening act was winding down, i pulled my David Copperfield act by taking a bathroom break, ditched that silly stadium t-shirt in the trash (anyone find it?), and headed up to the upper deck (only place it seems that had seats and little security--no ticket, you see). Anyway, the girl i was with at the time ditched her food-vending job as well and met me there shortly after. Shit, i can't even remember her name. And no, i didn't get a paycheck, ha, ha! Saw the Who there a week previously, and i could have sworn i saw William Burroughs hanging out with the stadium staff.

Damn cream-puff, that's hilarious your experience! Thanks for sharing it.

March 24, 1995 Charlotte. The whole scene was dismal and the music sucked - it was painful watching Jerry virtually nod out on stage and not be able to figure out what the hell was going on in probably the 5000th time he'd played a Chuck Berry song live. Sat on a hill before the show with another veteran of hundreds of shows and watched undercover cops come out of a trailer in the parking lot, bust some kids, take them back to the trailer, and then go out and do it again. Told others what was going on, but no one showed much sense. Charlotte made some revenue that night. Hated the self-referential stage backdrop with pics of the parking lot of VW vans and dancing hippies - it made the whole thing seem even more disnal. I went into these shows with a pretty bad state of mind about the boys (in fact, only shows I went to after 1990 as was living in Europe and just couldn't enjoy like I had), but the night before gave me hope with the song selection, Hornsby helping life things, etc. This was it - the end. And a very dismal end at that. Took me many years to get back into what I liked about the band/scene - archive played huge roll in reviving it. Anyway, hands down worst show I saw.

1. The infamous Boreal Ridge debacle of the summer of 1985
2. The horrendous 1/28/87 Get Back show
3. 4/4/86 at the Hartford Civic - Last Day Job, yeah!

I continued going until 91/92, but these couple were laughable, and so I did. I just laughed this shit off. I have off days, and there is only one of me. 6 guys trying to play IN CONCERT, well, there are going to be issues even if you are professionals.

I was at Boreal Ridge. Funny, but I had fun because of all my Tahoe pals. That said, we were all laughing at how bad the show was and blaming it on the altitude. One of those shows where the band sucked, but the fun to be had anyways with good friends outweighed the boys. I wasn't one of the ten thousand that day....

A bad show, not because of the music, but the arena.
Des Moines, early 80's, some new auditorium. No smoking, no drinking, no standing up, even in front of your own seat. In other, more succinct words, no fun.

Hands Down Starlake Ampitheater around Pittsburgh- Summer of 1994- there were a few good moments that night (the first set list looks better than it sounded- but it was not half bad)

The second set that night made me want to cry- that was my "I knew it was over" moment after 14 years.

Edit- OMIgod it was 1992- hmm downhill for the most part after that but for maybe a dozen shows from 93-95

Giants Stad 1993. Indeed my only memory is remembering how deflated the energy was. I felt it was all over. Such a contrast to Giants Stat 1991, second night, where 75,000 plus DHs were in moving in complete unison to the Dead's noodling...even the people way way way the freak up in the way back seats. Fall of 1993 gave me a few good shows at MSG (went to all of them after vowing I was done seeing the dead), but I stopped going after MSG '93 so that so I could end on a decent note.

I saw about 110 or so shows (sometimes hard to remember...) and i swear the only show i ever walked out of was bloody Giants Stadium Summer 1993, god awful sound like i was tripping inside a tin can, Jerry very much out of it, the crowd restless and waiting for something besides freakin "Way to Go" or "Easy Answers." No easy answers there!
And "Broken Arrow" never worked....

1986 RFK, both days. With Dylan, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The only bright spot was Tom Petty on the first day. But when they played the same set the second day, boring. "Hey Spike whadda ya like ... Nothin'..." Baby Blue and Desolation Row with Dylan were painful on the 7th. Still can't listen all the way through. The whole ordeal with the heat (lost 15 lbs. in two days), and the parking lot cops dumping all my beer, and the vegetarians kicking over my grill, and the dangerous night in DC, then Jerry collapsing, caused me to skip all of 1987. Still don't know if it was the scene or the music, I try to listen, but hate those shows.

I've been pretty lucky. Even the off nights were great. One of the weakest shows I saw was Copps Coliseum on the first night 1990 but I think that was a problem of volume---which was often a problem on the first night of a run.

Guess the worst was the second set at Tinley Park 1990. Brent's last show. The first set was brilliant actually. I have a tape of that. They played Truckin' towards the end of it and all the roadies and Dead Family came out on the stage and boogied down---end of tour celebration I suppose and then the band took it into Smokestack! Fantastic. The first first set Smokestack since---what--do I look like a Deadbase? But what could possibly follow that?

Turns out. Nothing. The second set was deplorable. Great set list but I think the band had had it with Tinley Puke (really folks, the worst venue I ever saw the Dead play and that's saying something)and maybe so had we. Maybe they'd started their end of tour celebrations backstage during the break. Maybe they were thinking about the plane flight home. Jerry was lacklustre, everyone seemed bored and so was I. I've made various attempts to collect this set (Brent's last show after all) borrowing it off people to tape or burn and then I play it and think, no, I don't need this one. I really don't. But the first set was great.

Even the last few shows that I saw at Seattle and Portland in '95 didn't leave me with the bad taste in my mouth that Tinley III did. Th first night they played great but I couldn't hear the band and the atmospherre of Tinley Puke had us all grinding our teeth and ready to find the owners and keelhaul them! Between the drunks and the rain, the lousy acoustics and the fact that they played Scarlet>Fire but I couldn't hear it that's probably a tie with the third nitgh.

Did I mention I hate Tinley Puke?
